Daniel Barry (July 11, 1923 – January 25, 1997) was an American cartoonist. He started drawing for comic books in the 1940s. Along with artists like Leonard Starr and Stan Drake, he helped create a special drawing style. This style was called "New York Slick." It was known for its very careful lines and clear textures. This look was popular in comics for a long time.

Daniel Barry's Comic Art

Early Comic Book Work

Daniel Barry drew for many comic books when he first started. Some of his early works included Airboy, Doc Savage, and Blue Bolt. He also drew covers for the Captain Midnight comic book. After serving in the Air Force, Barry came back to drawing comics.

Drawing Tarzan and Flash Gordon

Barry helped other famous artists with their comic strips. He assisted Burne Hogarth with the Tarzan daily comic strip. From 1947 to 1948, Barry even took over drawing the Tarzan strip himself.

In 1951, Daniel Barry brought back the popular Flash Gordon daily comic strip. He worked with different writers and artists over the years. Harvey Kurtzman wrote the stories while Barry drew the pictures. Other writers like Harry Harrison also wrote for Flash Gordon. Many artists, including Bob Fujitani and Frank Frazetta, helped Barry with his artwork.

When artist Mac Raboy passed away in 1967, Barry also began drawing the Flash Gordon Sunday strip. He even created the official poster for the 1980 Flash Gordon movie. Barry continued drawing Flash Gordon until 1990.

Other Works and Awards

Daniel Barry also drew for The Amazing Spider-Man comic strip for a short time in 1986. Later in his career, he worked for Dark Horse Comics. There, he wrote and drew many comic books for popular series like Indiana Jones and Predator.

In recognition of his amazing work in comics, Daniel Barry received the Inkpot Award in 1991. This award celebrates people who have made great contributions to comics and science fiction.

An Artist's Inspiration

Daniel Barry's work even inspired other artists! Between 1954 and 1957, two Spanish artists, Leopoldo Ortiz and José Ortiz, created a Western adventure comic strip. They named their main character "Dan Barry el Terremoto" (which means "Dan Barry the Earthquake") after the American artist.
