Dan "Boog" Hellie, born on May 23, 1975, is a well-known American sports announcer. He works for Fox Sports and the UFC, bringing exciting sports action to viewers. You can also see him on Dana White's UFC Tuesday Night Contender Series. He also covers Tennessee Titans preseason games and college football games on Fox. Before this, he was a sports anchor for WRC-TV in Washington, D.C.

Dan Hellie's Early Life

Dan Hellie was born in Manila, Philippines. His parents were working there with the Peace Corps at the time. He lived in Shoshone, Idaho, until he was in fourth grade. Then, his family moved to Gaithersburg, Maryland.

His mother was a middle school teacher. His father worked for the Interior Department. Dan went to Magruder High School. There, he was a talented athlete, playing football, basketball, and baseball.

After high school, Dan attended the University of Tennessee. He studied broadcast journalism and earned a bachelor's degree. He was also a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. In 2014, the University of Tennessee honored him with the Alumni Promise Award.

Starting His Career in Sports

Dan Hellie began his career in Alexandria, Minnesota. He worked as an editor, producer, and reporter. After nine months, he moved to Florence, South Carolina. There, he became a sports reporter and anchor for WPDE.

After two years, Dan moved to Florida. He first worked at WPTV in West Palm Beach. In 2003, he became the sports director at WFTV in Orlando. While at WFTV, he was named the best sportscaster in Florida by the Associated Press. The Orlando Sentinel also voted him the most popular sportscaster. He received an Associated Press award for a special story. This story was about bull riding, where he actually rode a bull for eight seconds!

In July 2006, Dan Hellie moved to WRC-TV in the Washington D.C. area. He worked there as an anchor and reporter. In 2011, he won Emmy awards for Outstanding Sports Anchor. He also won for Outstanding Sports Daily or Weekly Programs. Dan hosted the Redskins Coaches Show during his time there.

Dan Hellie's Current Work

Dan Hellie now works for the NFL Network. He used to co-anchor their main show, NFL Total Access, with Lindsay Rhodes. He has helped create many segments that were nominated for Emmy awards. These include awards for Outstanding Studio Show-Daily. He also received a Shorty Award for how well he used social media with live TV.

Dan is also a play-by-play announcer for Tennessee Titans preseason games. He works alongside fellow NFL Network analyst Charles Davis. He also calls NFL games for FOX. You can often hear him calling college football games for FOX too.

On July 11, 2017, Dan Hellie started hosting Dana White's Tuesday Night Contender series. He launched it with former UFC Lightweight Yves Edwards. This show aired online on UFC Fight Pass. Dan worked with Snoop Dogg and UFC Hall of Famer Urijah Faber on this series.

Dan Hellie is also the host of the UFC's official Weigh-In Show. This show happens before most pay-per-view events. He is joined by Laura Sanko, Daniel Cormier, and a special guest analyst. He also calls college basketball games on Fox. Since March 2023, Dan Hellie has hosted all Power Slap events with Michael Bisping.

Personal Life

Dan Hellie lives in Manhattan Beach, California. He lives there with his wife and their two children. In 2008, Dan gave the graduation speech at his old high school, Magruder High School. He was also added to the Magruder Athletic Hall of Fame on October 26, 2012.
