A Look Back at Dancyville's History

Dancyville officially started in 1837. Two business owners, Fennell T. Carpenter and John Sutherland, helped set it up. The community got its name from Isaac Dancy, a local blacksmith who moved to the area in 1831. The very first settlers arrived even earlier, in the 1820s.

The name Dancyville first appeared in official records in March 1838. At that time, a group was formed to plan a road from the Fayette County line through Dancyville all the way to Brownsville. In 1854, the people living in Dancyville tried to make it an official town, but that plan didn't last.

During the American Civil War, Dancyville played a part. Two groups of soldiers were formed right there in the community. They were known as the Dancyville Grays and Company L of the 9th Tennessee Infantry Division.

Places of Worship

The early settlers of Dancyville built many churches. The Dancyville United Methodist Church was founded in 1837. A Baptist church was started in 1838, but it is no longer there today. A Presbyterian church was also built in 1853. More recently, the Dancyville Assembly of God church has been formed in the community.

Learning and Schools

Dancyville has also been home to several schools over the years. In 1849, the Dancyville Female Academy was created. It first met in the local Masonic Lodge building. A special building for the Academy was finished and opened in 1851. Also in 1851, the Dancyville Male Academy was started for boys. Later, these two schools joined together to become the Dancyville Male and Female Academy. In 1855, the Baptist Female College was organized. Then, in 1884, the Methodist Brownsville District High School was also formed in Dancyville.
