Daniel Auteuil (born 24 January 1950) is a famous French actor and director. He has starred in many different kinds of movies, from historical dramas and crime thrillers to romantic comedies. Many people consider him one of the most respected actors in France.

Auteuil has won many important awards for his acting. In 1996, he won the Best Actor Award at the famous Cannes Film Festival. He has also won two César Awards, which are like the French version of the Oscars. He won one in 1987 for the films Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources. He won another for the movie Girl on the Bridge. For Jean de Florette, he also won a BAFTA Award, which is a major British film award.

Early Life and First Steps on Stage

Daniel Auteuil was born on 24 January 1950, in Algiers, which was part of French Algeria at the time. His parents were both opera singers. He grew up in the cities of Avignon and Nancy in France. He started his career acting in musical comedies and appeared in his first film in 1972.

When he was 16, Auteuil began acting on stage in a play by Anton Chekhov. To make his parents happy, he also studied topography (the art of map-making). To earn money, he worked in a nightclub cloakroom on Saturdays.

In 1969, he moved to Paris and signed up for an acting class. Even though he tried many times, he was never accepted into the Conservatoire national supérieur d'art dramatique, France's top acting school.

Career

Auteuil started his professional acting career in 1970. He appeared in the American musical Godspell in 1972. He also acted in several plays, and in 1979, he won the Gérard Philipe prize for the best young theatre actor in Paris.

He began appearing on television in 1974. In 1975, he got a major role in the movie L'Agression, acting alongside famous stars like Catherine Deneuve and Jean-Louis Trintignant.

His big break came in 1986 with the historical movie Jean de Florette and its sequel, Manon des Sources. These films made him famous all over the world. After that, he became one of the most popular and best-paid actors in France.

He has shown his talent in many different roles. He starred in the adventure film Le bossu (1997), the comedy The Closet (2001), and the thriller Caché (2005). These movies helped him become even more well-known outside of France.

In 2013, he was chosen to be a member of the jury at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, which is a great honor for an actor.

Personal Life

Daniel Auteuil has three children. He has a daughter named Aurore Auteuil from his relationship with Anne Jousset. He also has a daughter named Nelly from his ten-year relationship with actress Emmanuelle Béart. He and Béart starred together in the movies A Heart in Winter and Manon des Sources.

On 22 July 2006, he married Aude Ambroggi, a sculptor from Corsica.
