Early Life and Education
Daniel Chapo was born in Inhaminga, Sofala Province, Mozambique. He went to primary school in Inhaminga and Dondo District. He then attended secondary school in Dondo District and later in Beira.
He studied law at Eduardo Mondlane University in Maputo, graduating in 2000. In 2004, he became a notary public, which is someone who can legally witness signatures on documents. He also earned a master's degree in development management in 2014 from the Catholic University of Mozambique.
Before his political career, Chapo worked in media. He was an announcer for Rádio Miramar in Beira from 1997 to 1998. Later, he was a news presenter for Televisão Miramar in Maputo from 2003 to 2004. He also taught political science and constitutional law at Maputo Pedagogical University in 2009.
Political Journey
Chapo began his political career with the FRELIMO party in 2009. His first role was as an administrator for the Nacala-a-Velha District. In 2015, he became the administrator of the Palma District.
Serving as Governor of Inhambane
On March 4, 2016, Daniel Chapo was appointed the governor of Inhambane Province. Three years later, the people of Inhambane elected him to this position during the general elections in October 2019.
On May 5, 2024, FRELIMO chose Chapo as their candidate for the 2024 presidential election. He received 225 votes, which was 94% of the party committee's votes. This decision was a surprise to many, as he was not widely known at the time. To focus on the election, he resigned as governor of Inhambane Province on May 23, 2024. Eduardo Mussanhane took over as the new governor.
Presidential Election and Victory
Daniel Chapo is the first FRELIMO presidential candidate who was born after Mozambique gained independence from Portugal in 1975. Because FRELIMO is a very strong party in Mozambique, many people expected Chapo to win the election.
On October 24, 2024, Mozambique's election commission announced that Chapo had won the election with 71% of the votes. However, some groups raised concerns about the election results. The opposition PODEMOS party disagreed with the official results. They shared their own count, which suggested a different outcome. The Episcopal Conference of Mozambique and the European Union also questioned the results.
Presidency
Despite the concerns raised about the election, Daniel Chapo was officially sworn in as president on January 15, 2025. A few days later, on January 18, 2025, President Chapo named Maria Benvinda Levi as the new Prime Minister of Mozambique.
About His Family
