Dani Jarque's Football Journey
Born in Barcelona, Catalonia, Dani Jarque grew up in the youth system of his local club, RCD Espanyol. He made his first appearance in Spain's top football league, La Liga, on October 20, 2002. This was during the 2002–03 season.
Becoming a Key Player
After playing in 15 matches over two seasons, Dani became a very important defender for Espanyol. He helped his team win the Copa del Rey (a major Spanish football cup) in 2006. On September 18, 2005, he scored the only goal in a game that helped Espanyol beat Real Madrid.
In the 2006–07 season, Dani signed a new contract that would keep him with Espanyol until 2009. He played in 14 UEFA Cup games. Espanyol reached the final of this competition. They lost the final to Sevilla FC after a penalty shootout. In the previous league season, he scored four goals.
At the start of the 2009–10 season, Dani Jarque was given the important role of captain for Espanyol. He took over from Raúl Tamudo.
Remembering Dani Jarque
Dani Jarque sadly passed away during Espanyol's pre-season training in Florence, Italy. On August 8, 2009, he was talking on the phone with his girlfriend at the team hotel when he had a heart attack. His girlfriend, who was pregnant at the time, told his roommate Coro that she couldn't reach him.
Tributes from Fellow Players
Many footballers paid tribute to Dani Jarque.
- On August 15, 2009, Arsenal player Cesc Fàbregas scored a goal and showed a shirt with Dani's name and number (21). Cesc had played with Dani in the Spain under-21 team.
- The next month, Espanyol won their first match at their new stadium, Estadi Cornellà-El Prat. The goal scorer, Iván Alonso, also paid tribute to Dani. This happened as Dani's girlfriend was giving birth to their daughter.
- On July 11, 2010, Dani's close friend Andrés Iniesta scored the winning goal in the FIFA World Cup final. He took off his jersey to show a message: "Dani Jarque siempre con nosotros" ("Dani Jarque, always with us").
- Two years later, after Spain won UEFA Euro 2012, Cesc Fàbregas again wore a special T-shirt during the celebrations to remember Dani.
Training Ground Renamed
