Daniel MacCarthy Reagh (c. 1640 – 1691), also known as Donal, was an important Irish leader, politician, and soldier. He supported King James II during a time of big changes in Ireland. Daniel was a Member of Parliament for Bandonbridge and bravely fought for King James II. He died in a major battle called the Battle of Aughrim.

Who Was Daniel MacCarthy Reagh?

Daniel MacCarthy Reagh was born around 1640. He was the second son of Cormac MacCarthy Reagh and Ellen MacCarty. His family, the MacCarthy Reaghs, were a powerful and old Irish family. They were a branch of the larger MacCarthy-Mor family. His mother's family, the MacCarthys of Muskerry, were also a well-known branch of the MacCarthy family.

Supporting King James II

In 1688, Daniel MacCarthy Reagh showed his loyalty to King James II. He helped to create an Irish army group, called a regiment, to support the King. This was during a time known as the Glorious Revolution, when there was a lot of political change in England and Ireland.

A Member of Parliament

In 1689, Daniel MacCarthy Reagh was chosen to be a MP. He represented the area of Bandonbridge. He served in the Patriot Parliament, which was a special meeting of Irish lawmakers called by King James II. This Parliament met for a few months in 1689.

His Family Life

Daniel MacCarthy Reagh married a woman named Maria. Her father was Richard Townsend. Daniel and Maria had two daughters, but sadly, neither of them married.

A Soldier's End

Daniel MacCarthy Reagh continued to serve in the Irish army that supported King James II. This was during a conflict known as the Williamite War in Ireland. In 1690, he was given an important role as a deputy lieutenant for County Cork. This meant he helped manage the county's military affairs.

His life as a soldier ended at the Battle of Aughrim. This was a very important and fierce battle fought on July 12, 1691. Daniel MacCarthy Reagh was killed during this battle while fighting for King James II.
