Daniel McCarthy (born January 22, 1883 – died March 2, 1957) was an important Irish politician. He helped shape Ireland's early government. He was also a leader in Irish sports and culture.

Who Was Daniel McCarthy?
Daniel McCarthy was born in Dublin, Ireland. He lived during a time of big changes for his country. He was involved in the fight for Ireland's independence. Later, he became a key figure in the new Irish government.
Early Life and Irish Volunteers
As a young man, Daniel McCarthy joined the Irish Volunteers. This group worked for Ireland's freedom. In 1916, he took part in the Easter Rising. This was a major event in Dublin. He was hurt during the fighting.
After the Rising, he was held prisoner by the British. But he managed to escape from Durham Prison. He was one of the first members of Sinn Féin to join the Dublin Corporation. This was the local government for Dublin city.
A New Irish Government
In 1921, Daniel McCarthy was elected to Dáil Éireann. This is Ireland's parliament. He became a Teachta Dála (TD), which is like a Member of Parliament. He represented the Dublin South area.
He supported the Anglo-Irish Treaty. This agreement created the Irish Free State. After the Treaty, he joined a new political party. It was called Cumann na nGaedheal.
In 1922, he joined the government led by W. T. Cosgrave. He became the first person to hold the job of Parliamentary Secretary to the President. This role is also known as the Government Chief Whip. He served in this job until 1924. He then left politics later that year.
Leading Irish Sports and Culture
Beyond politics, Daniel McCarthy was very active in Irish life. From 1921 to 1924, he was the President of the Gaelic Athletic Association. This is often called the GAA. The GAA promotes traditional Irish sports. These sports include Gaelic football and hurling.
He was also a member of Conradh na Gaeilge. This group works to promote the Irish language. Later in his life, he worked as a deputy governor. This was at Kilmainham Gaol, a famous prison in Dublin.
