Daniel Claudiu Prodan (born March 23, 1972 – died November 16, 2016) was a famous Romanian football player. He was a strong central defender. Daniel Prodan played for many teams, especially Steaua București. He also played for the Romanian national team. He even played in a World Cup and a European Championship! His career had some tough times because of injuries.

Playing for Clubs
Daniel Prodan was born in Satu Mare, Romania. He started his football journey with his hometown team, FC Olimpia Satu Mare. In late 1992, he joined one of Romania's biggest clubs, FC Steaua București.
Success with Steaua București
With Steaua București, Daniel Prodan was a key player. He helped the team win the Liga I title five times in a row! He usually played as a starter in most games. His first game in the league was on November 8, when he was 20 years old. Steaua won that game 3–1 against FC Farul Constanța.
Moving to Spain and Scotland
In January 1997, Daniel Prodan moved to Spain. He joined the team Atlético Madrid. He scored four goals in the La Liga in just half a season. He played 17 matches that season. He played a similar number of games the next season. However, he sometimes got into trouble and received two red cards.
In the summer of 1998, Prodan moved to Scotland. He joined Rangers. He had scored a memorable goal against Rangers for Steaua in the UEFA Champions League in 1995. Sadly, he did not play any first-team games for Rangers. This was because of a serious knee injury he got while playing for Atlético Madrid. He left Rangers in January 2001.
End of Club Career
During the last five years of his career, Daniel Prodan faced many challenges. He played only 33 matches in total for four different teams. He retired from football at the age of 31. His last team was FC Progresul București.
Playing for Romania
Daniel Prodan played 54 games for the Romanian national team. He played for his country between 1993 and 2001. He was part of the team for the 1994 FIFA World Cup. Romania reached the quarter-finals in that tournament. Daniel Prodan played every minute of every game! He also played in the UEFA Euro 1996 tournament.
First International Goal
His only goal for Romania came on November 12, 1994. He scored the winning goal in a 3–2 victory against Slovakia. This game was part of the qualifiers for the European Championship. His goal helped Romania qualify for the finals.
About His Life
Daniel Prodan had a younger brother named Ciprian. Ciprian was also a football player. On November 16, 2016, Daniel Prodan sadly passed away. He was 44 years old and died from a heart attack. In February 2017, the stadium in Satu Mare was renamed in his honor. It is now called Stadionul Daniel Prodan.
