Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Daniel Roseingrave (born around 1655 – died May 1727) was an English organist and composer. He spent most of his career in Dublin, Ireland, where he became a very important musician.

Early Life and Music Career

Daniel Roseingrave was likely from the Gloucester area in England. He started his career playing the organ at big churches called cathedrals.

His first known job was as an organist at Gloucester Cathedral from 1679 to 1681. He later sent his own sons to Gloucester for their education.

After Gloucester, he worked at Winchester Cathedral from 1682 to 1692. Then he moved to Salisbury Cathedral, where he was the organist from 1692 to 1698.

Moving to Ireland

In 1698, Daniel Roseingrave moved to Dublin, Ireland. This was a big step in his career. He became the organist at two important churches at the same time: Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin and St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin.

His family became very influential in music in Dublin. For about 50 years, the Roseingrave family was a major part of the music scene at these cathedrals.

Daniel stayed as the organist at Christ Church until he passed away in Dublin in 1727. His son, Ralph, joined him as an organist at St Patrick's Cathedral starting in 1719.

His Compositions

Daniel Roseingrave wrote some music for churches. One of his known pieces is a song called an anthem, titled Lord, thou art become gracious.

It can sometimes be tricky to tell his music apart from the music written by his sons. This is because his sons were also composers. Experts have worked to figure out which pieces were written by each Roseingrave family member.

His Musical Family

Daniel Roseingrave had two sons who also became famous musicians. His sons, Thomas Roseingrave and Ralph Roseingrave, followed in his footsteps. They both became well-known composers and organists, just like their father.
