About Daniela Krukower

Early Life and Moving to Israel

Daniela Krukower was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Her family is Jewish. When she was young, her family moved to Israel. This is where Daniela first started learning and practicing judo.

Choosing to Represent Argentina

In the mid-1990s, Daniela was one of two promising female judokas in Israel. Both competed in the same weight category, which was around 63 kg. Because the IFJ only allows one athlete per country in each weight class at the Olympic Games, Daniela decided to represent her birth country, Argentina. She felt this would give her the best chance to compete at the Olympics.

Retirement from Judo

Daniela decided to retire from judo at the start of the 2009-2010 season. This was after she won a gold medal at the 2009 Pan American Judo Championships. She felt she had achieved her goals and was ready for a new chapter.

Daniela's Judo Career Highlights

Winning a World Championship Title

A very important moment in Daniela's career was at the 2003 World Judo Championships in Osaka, Japan. She was not expected to win, but she surprised everyone! In the final match, she defeated Driulys González from Cuba. González was an Olympic gold medalist. Daniela won the match by ippon, which is the highest score in judo. After this big win, Daniela became a well-known athlete in Argentina. People hoped she would win a medal at the next Olympic Games.

Competing at the Olympic Games

At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, Daniela was a strong favorite to win. She won her first two fights. However, in the semi-final match against Ayumi Tanimoto from Japan, Daniela suffered a serious injury. She broke her hand early in the fight. Because of this injury, she could not continue the tournament. The Argentine media called Daniela the "Iron Lady" because of her toughness.

Other Important Achievements

Daniela continued to compete after her injury. She achieved many successes in competitions across the Americas.
