Daniela Garnero (born on April 7, 1961), known as Daniela Santanchè, is an Italian politician. She used her former husband's last name in her public life. She also serves as the Minister of Tourism in the government led by Giorgia Meloni.

Biography

Early Life and Education

Daniela Garnero was born in Cuneo, a city in Piedmont, Italy. She moved to Turin to study political science at university. When she was 21, she married Paolo Santanchè, who was a plastic surgeon. She worked for his company in an office role.

In 1983, after her studies, she started her own company that focused on marketing. Later, she bought shares in the Billionaire company. She did this with famous people like Flavio Briatore, Lele Mora, Paolo Brosio, and Marcello Lippi.

Family Life

In 1995, Daniela Santanchè and Paolo Santanchè separated. She then started a relationship with Canio Mazzaro, who owned a company that made medicines. Even after her marriage ended, she continued to use the Santanchè surname in her political career. Her current partner is Dimitri Kunz d'Asburgo Lorena.

Starting in Local Politics

In the 1990s, Daniela Santanchè became an assistant to Ignazio La Russa. In 1995, she joined a right-wing political party called National Alliance. She worked as an advisor for the city council of Milan. In June 1999, she was elected as a councillor for the Province of Milan.

In 2001, Santanchè tried to win a seat in the Italian Parliament, but she was not elected at first. However, she later took a seat that became available. From 2003 to 2004, she worked as an assessor for the town of Ragalna. In this role, she was in charge of sports and events.

Moving to National Politics

From 2005 to 2007, Santanchè was in charge of the department for equal opportunity for the National Alliance party. In 2005, she was chosen to lead the discussion about the yearly Financial Law. She was the first woman in Italy to have this important role. In 2006, she was elected again to the Italian Parliament for the National Alliance party in Milan.

New Political Parties

On November 10, 2007, Daniela Santanchè left the National Alliance party. She joined a new party called The Right, led by Francesco Storace. On the same day, she became the official spokesperson for this new party. Santanchè was then a candidate for Prime Minister for The Right party in the 2008 Italian general election. She was one of the first women ever to run for Prime Minister in Italy.

However, The Right party did not get enough votes to enter Parliament. Because of this, Daniela Santanchè's time as a Member of Parliament ended. After seven years, she received some money when she left her job. She said she would give this money to charity.

On September 28, 2008, Santanchè left The Right party after a disagreement. Soon after, she started a new political group called Movement for Italy. Her goal was to work more closely with Silvio Berlusconi's party, People of Freedom.

Joining Brothers of Italy

On December 3, 2017, Santanchè joined the Brothers of Italy (FdI) party. She attended their party meeting in Trieste. In the 2018 Italian general election, she was elected as a Senator for the Cremona area. She was elected again in 2022, winning with 52.17% of the votes.

On October 22, 2022, she officially became the Minister of Tourism. She serves in the government led by Giorgia Meloni.
