History of Daniels

How Daniels Started and Changed Names

The town of Daniels began in 1810. The Ely family, led by Thomas Ely, moved to the area. They built a textile mill there. A textile mill is a factory that makes cloth. The community that grew around this mill was first called Elysville.

In 1853, the Gary family bought the town. They renamed it Alberton. This new name honored Albert Gary, the son of James S. Gary. The factory stayed with the Gary family for many years.

In 1940, the Daniels Company bought the town. They changed its name one last time to Daniels.

Events in Daniels' History

On September 24, 1926, the Saint Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church was hit by lightning. The church then burned down.

By the late 1960s, about 90 families lived in Daniels. In 1968, the C.R. Daniels Company owned the town. They told the people living there that all housing would close soon.

Why Daniels Became a Ghost Town

In June 1972, a big storm hit the area. It was called tropical storm Agnes. The storm caused the Patapsco River to flood. This flood destroyed most of the empty buildings left in Daniels. After this, Daniels became a true ghost town.
