History of the Daniels & Fisher Tower
The Daniels & Fisher Tower was built in 1910. It was once part of a big department store called Daniels & Fisher. When it was finished, this tower was the tallest building between the Mississippi River and California. It stood at an amazing 325 feet (99 meters) high!
Design and Inspiration
A talented architect named Frederick Sterner designed the tower. He got his idea from a famous bell tower in Venice, Italy. This Italian tower is called The Campanile (St. Mark's Bell Tower). You can see how similar they look!
The Clock and Bell
The Daniels & Fisher Tower is a 20-floor clock tower. It has large clock faces on all four sides. This means you can tell the time no matter which way you look at it! High up in the tower, there's a huge bell. This bell weighs about 2½ tons, which is super heavy! It sits just above an observation deck.
Saving the Tower
In 1958, another company bought the Daniels & Fisher store. The store eventually moved out of the tower. Around 1971, the main store building was taken down. But luckily, the tower itself was saved! In 1981, it was given a new life. It was changed into apartments and offices.
The Tower Today
Today, the Daniels & Fisher Tower is located in Denver's Skyline Park. If you go to the basement level, you can find the Clocktower Cabaret. This is a fun entertainment place that opened in 2006. The tower is also recognized as an important historic site. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 3, 1969. This means it's protected because of its special history and design.
