Joseph Daniel "Danny" Talbott (born November 1, 1944 – died January 19, 2020) was an amazing American athlete. He was a professional player in both American football and baseball. Danny was known for his skills in many sports, especially during his time at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Danny Talbott: A Star Athlete

Danny Talbott was a talented athlete who excelled in multiple sports. He showed great skill from a young age and continued to shine throughout his college career.

College Sports Hero

At the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Danny Talbott was a star. He played as a quarterback for the North Carolina Tar Heels football team for two seasons. In 1966, he was named the ACC Player of the Year. This is a big award given to the best player in the conference.

Talbott also played baseball for the North Carolina Tar Heels baseball team. He led them to the College World Series in 1966. This is a major championship tournament for college baseball teams. He even played basketball for North Carolina on their freshman team. However, he later chose to focus on football and baseball.

Professional Dreams

In 1967, Danny Talbott was chosen in the 17th round of the 1967 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. This meant a professional football team wanted him to play for them. However, he decided not to sign with the 49ers. Instead, he chose to play professional baseball. He joined the Baltimore Orioles's minor league system.

Later, his NFL draft rights were traded to the Washington Redskins. This happened on March 5, 1968. But during training camp, he was called to serve in the United States Army Reserve. This meant he missed the entire football season. In 1969, he spent the season on the Redskins' taxi squad. This is a group of players who practice with the team but are not on the main roster. He was released by the team before the 1970 season began.

High School Achievements

Before college, Danny Talbott was already a local legend. He attended Rocky Mount High School. In his senior year, 1963, he led the Blackbirds to win state championships. They won in baseball, basketball, and football. Winning three state championships in one year is a very rare and impressive achievement.

Lasting Legacy

Danny Talbott's contributions to sports were recognized in many ways. In 2003, he was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. This honor celebrates athletes who have made a big impact in North Carolina sports.

His No. 10 football jersey is also honored at Kenan Stadium. It hangs there along with other special jerseys. This shows how important he was to the North Carolina Tar Heels football program. In 2018, the Danny Talbott Cancer Center was named after him. This center is located at Nash UNC Health Care in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.

Danny Talbott passed away on January 19, 2020, at the age of 75. He died due to complications from cancer.
