How Danone North America Started
Early Days as WhiteWave Foods
The company began in 1977 as "WhiteWave Foods". Steve Demos started it in Boulder, Colorado. His goal was to bring more soy products to the market. This included things like soy milk.
Becoming Part of Dean Foods
In 2002, a larger company called Dean Foods bought WhiteWave. WhiteWave then became a part of Dean Foods. This made WhiteWave a "subsidiary," which means it was owned by another company.
Becoming Independent Again
After several years, Dean Foods decided to let WhiteWave become its own company again. This happened in August 2012. WhiteWave sold shares to the public in an "initial public offering" (IPO). This means people could buy parts of the company.
Growing with New Brands
WhiteWave Foods grew by buying other companies.
- On January 2, 2014, WhiteWave bought Earthbound Farm. This was America's biggest grower of organic fruits and vegetables.
- In September 2014, WhiteWave announced it would buy So Delicious. So Delicious makes vegan desserts and drinks. The deal was completed on October 31, 2014.
Joining the Danone Family
On July 7, 2016, the French food company Danone announced it would buy WhiteWave. This was a very big deal. WhiteWave's board of directors agreed to the sale.
The purchase was completed in April 2017. The new company was first named "DanoneWave." In April 2018, it was renamed "Danone North America." It now operates as a part of Danone. Its main office is still in Denver.
