Where is Dante?
Dante is a small town in South Dakota. It covers an area of about 0.50 square miles (1.29 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
The Story Behind Dante's Name
Dante wasn't always called Dante! It was first named Mayo in 1908. The town was named after an early settler, H.T. Mayo.
In 1910, a railroad company wanted to build a train station there. However, they didn't like the name Mayo. They felt it wasn't a good name for a town with a train depot. So, they asked the people living there to choose a new name.
H.T. Mayo, the person the town was named after, didn't really care what they called it. He jokingly suggested, "You can call it Dante's Inferno for all I care." And that's how the town got its unique name, Dante!
