Darbys Falls is a small village in New South Wales, Australia. It is located about 15 kilometers east of the town of Cowra. In 2011, about 316 people lived in Darbys Falls. This included 5 Indigenous people. More than half the population (51.9%) were male, and 48.1% were female.

Community and Education

Near the village, you can find a public astronomical observatory. This is a special place where people can look at stars and planets! Darbys Falls does not have its own school. Younger students go to Wyangala Dam Public School. Older students travel to Cowra for high school.

Location and Landscape

Darbys Falls is located along the Lachlan River. This river flows between two places: Wyangala and Cowra. The land around Darbys Falls is rough and hilly. You can see large rock formations called granitoid tors and many boulders. This area also has a history of mining for different minerals, including gold.

Lynne Sawyers Reserve Story

In 2012, the village community wanted to rename the Darbys Falls Recreational Reserve. They wanted to honor a special person named Lynne Sawyers. Lynne was named "Local Australian of the Year" in 2012. She received this award from the Prime Minister, Julia Gillard. Lynne was recognized for her amazing community work. Over 15 years, she helped care for more than 200 children.

However, the official board that names places in New South Wales said no. Their rule is that places cannot be named after people who are still alive. Even though the board refused, the local Cowra Council encouraged the village to go ahead. They held an official renaming ceremony in 2013 to honor Lynne Sawyers.
