Dario Calmese is a talented artist and photographer from Missouri. He made history by becoming the very first African American to photograph the cover of Vanity Fair magazine. Besides his photography, Dario also hosts a podcast called Institute of Black Imagination, where he shares interesting ideas.

Dario's Journey in Photography

Dario Calmese started his journey in photography in 2012. He was studying at the School of Visual Arts when he began taking pictures. It was during this time that he discovered his passion for capturing moments through his camera lens.

Early Work and Fashion

In 2015, some of Dario's early photographs were shown in a special art display. These pictures featured Harlem fashion collector Lana Turner. His work helped people see the unique style and culture of Harlem.

Dario also got involved in the world of fashion shows. In 2013, he started working with fashion designer Kerby Jean-Raymond. Dario first helped choose the models for the shows as a "casting director." Later, he became the main director for these exciting fashion events. In 2019, he even directed a big show for the brand Pyer Moss at the famous Kings Theater in Brooklyn.

Making History with Vanity Fair

Dario Calmese achieved a major milestone in his career in 2020. He photographed the cover of Vanity Fair magazine for its July/August issue. The person on that historic cover was the famous actress Viola Davis. This was a huge moment because it was the first time an African American photographer had shot the main cover for Vanity Fair.

Before this big cover, Dario had already worked with Vanity Fair on other projects. He had photographed well-known stars like actor Billy Porter, actor George MacKay, and Broadway star Adrienne Warren for the magazine. His talent and hard work led him to make history with the Viola Davis cover.
