Dario Mangiarotti was an Italian fencer. He was born in Milan on December 18, 1915. He passed away on April 9, 2010, at the age of 94.

Dario came from a very famous fencing family. His father, Giuseppe Mangiarotti, was also a fencer. He competed in the 1908 Olympic Games. Dario's brother, Edoardo Mangiarotti, became one of Italy's most successful Olympic athletes ever. Another brother, Mario Mangiarotti, also fenced.

Dario Mangiarotti's Fencing Journey

Dario learned fencing from his father. He quickly became a top fencer in Italy.

Early Wins and National Titles

Dario first won the Italian individual épée championship in 1936. The épée is one of the three types of swords used in fencing. He won this title many more times. He was also the champion in 1938, 1940, 1946, 1951, and 1953.

World Championship Success

Dario Mangiarotti earned many medals at the FIE World Championships in Fencing. He won seven medals in the team épée events. Four of these were gold medals (in 1937, 1949, 1950, and 1953). He also won one silver medal (1951) and two bronze medals (1938, 1947).

He also achieved success in individual events. He won a gold medal in the individual épée competition in 1949. In 1950, he earned a bronze medal in the same event.

Olympic Games Achievements

Dario competed in two Olympic Games. At the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, he won a silver medal. This was in the team épée event. The Italian team finished second to France.

At the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Dario's team won the gold medal. This was a great victory for Italy. Dario also won another silver medal at these Games. He finished second in the individual épée competition. His brother, Edoardo, won the gold in that event.

Later Career and Legacy

Dario Mangiarotti continued to fence for many years. He won his final major title in 1966. This was at the World Masters Championships in Rome. He won in the individual épée category.

After his fencing career, Dario became a fencing teacher. In 1967, he became the Head Maestro. This means he was the main teacher at the Italian fencing school Circolo della Spada. He held this important position for a very long time. He was still teaching when he turned 90 years old in 2005.

Dario's family continued their fencing tradition. His niece, Carola Mangiarotti, also became an Olympic fencer. She competed in the 1976 and 1980 Olympic Games. His brother Mario, who was also a fencer, later became a heart doctor. Dario Mangiarotti passed away in Lavagna in 2010.
