A Dark 'n' Stormy is a well-known drink with a fun name! It gets its name from its two main ingredients: dark rum, which gives it a "dark" color, and ginger beer, which is bubbly and spicy like a "stormy" sea. It's usually served over ice with a slice of lime.

This drink is similar to another one called the Moscow mule. The main difference is that a Dark 'n' Stormy uses dark rum, while a Moscow Mule uses vodka. The first Dark 'n' Stormy was made with Gosling Black Seal rum and Barritt's Ginger Beer. Later, the Gosling Brothers company started making its own ginger beer.

The Gosling Brothers company says this drink was created in Bermuda right after World War I.

Protecting the Name

In the United States, the name "Dark 'n' Stormy" is a special trademark owned by Gosling Brothers Ltd. This means that only drinks made with Gosling Black Seal rum can officially use the name "Dark 'n' Stormy" for marketing. Gosling Brothers often connects the drink to the world of sail racing and boating.

Different Ways to Write the Name

The Gosling Brothers company has registered the name with one apostrophe: "Dark 'n' Stormy." However, the International Bartenders Association uses two apostrophes: "Dark 'n' Stormy." Because the name is trademarked, some people use other names for similar drinks, like "safe harbor."

Other Versions of the Drink

There are a few different ways to make a drink similar to the Dark 'n' Stormy. For example, a "cider and stormy" mixes dark rum, apple cider, and ginger beer. Another version, called the "fall dark 'n' stormy," uses bourbon, apple cider, lemon juice, and ginger beer.
