Darren Dimitri Mattocks (born 2 September 1990) is a professional footballer from Jamaica. He played as a forward, which means he was usually trying to score goals. His last teams were Phoenix Rising FC and the Jamaica national football team.
Contents
College Career
Darren Mattocks played college soccer for the University of Akron. He played for two years, from 2010 to 2011. During this time, he played in 47 games and scored 39 goals. He was recognized as one of the best new players in college soccer.
Professional Career
Vancouver Whitecaps FC
In 2012, Darren was chosen by Vancouver Whitecaps FC in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft. He was the second player picked overall!
He played his first game for the Whitecaps against the Montreal Impact. Soon after, he had an accident where he got burns from cooking. This meant he couldn't play for almost two months. He returned to the team on May 9 and scored his first goal for the Whitecaps in the last few minutes of the game.
Darren scored his first MLS goal on May 26, 2012, against the Portland Timbers. He scored six goals in his first nine MLS games that year. In the Whitecaps' first-ever playoff game, he scored their first playoff goal. He won the team's Golden Boot award in 2012 for scoring seven goals. MLS also named him the best young player under 24 in the league that year.
Portland Timbers
In March 2016, Mattocks moved to the Portland Timbers. He was traded for some special funds that MLS teams use.
D.C. United
On December 10, 2017, Darren joined D.C. United. His contract with Portland wasn't renewed, so he was traded for a spot that allowed D.C. United to sign international players. He started strong, but then a famous player named Wayne Rooney joined the team. This meant Darren played less often.
On March 11, 2018, he scored his first MLS goal for D.C. United. He played in 25 games for D.C. United and scored 10 goals.
FC Cincinnati
In December 2018, Darren Mattocks was chosen by FC Cincinnati in the 2018 MLS Expansion Draft. This draft happens when new teams join the league.
Al-Merrikh
After not playing for a club for almost a year, Mattocks joined Al-Merrikh in Sudan in February 2021. He played for them in the CAF Champions League.
Phoenix Rising FC
On August 18, 2021, Mattocks signed with Phoenix Rising FC. This team plays in the USL Championship league in the United States.
International Career
Darren Mattocks first played for the Jamaica national team in 2012. His first game was a 2–0 win against El Salvador.
He scored three goals in the 2014 Caribbean Cup. This made him one of the top scorers in the tournament. Jamaica won the championship for the sixth time that year.
In 2015, Mattocks was part of Jamaica's teams for the Copa América and CONCACAF Gold Cup. On July 22, 2015, he scored the first goal in a big semi-final game against the United States. Jamaica won 2–1 and reached their first-ever Gold Cup final! He also scored in the final game against Mexico, but Jamaica lost 3–1.
Personal Life
In May 2014, Darren Mattocks received his U.S. green card. This meant he was considered a local player for MLS teams.
