Darryll John Pines is an American aerospace engineer and a leader in education. He is currently the president of the University of Maryland, College Park. Before becoming president, he was the dean of the A. James Clark School of Engineering. He also held a special teaching position called the Glenn L. Martin professorship of aerospace engineering.
Early Life and Education
Darryll John Pines was born in Oakland, California, in the United States. His birthday is August 28, 1964. He studied mechanical engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. There, he earned his Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree.
Pines continued his studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He earned his Master of Science (M.S.) degree in 1988. Later, in 1992, he completed his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree. Both of these advanced degrees were also in mechanical engineering.
Career Highlights
In 1995, Darryll Pines joined the faculty at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD). He started as an assistant professor. He later became the dean of the A. James Clark School of Engineering. He served in this important role for 11 years.
During his time as dean, he also held the Glenn L. Martin professorship. This is a special title for professors in aerospace engineering. On July 1, 2020, Pines became the president of the University of Maryland. He took over from the previous president, Wallace Loh. As president, he leads the entire university.
