Darul Uloom Deoband is a very important Islamic university in India. It's known as the starting point of a big Islamic movement called Deobandi Sunni Islam. This university is located in a town called Deoband, in the Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh. It was founded in 1866 by a scholar named Muhammad Qasim Nanautavi.

Founding the University
Darul Uloom Deoband was officially started on May 31, 1866. It was founded by Muhammad Qasim Nanotawi and other important scholars. Some of the other founders included Sayyid Muhammad Abid, Mehtab Ali, and Nehal Ahmad. Nehal Ahmad was Muhammad Qasim Nanautavi's brother-in-law.
First Teachers and Students
The first teacher at Darul Uloom Deoband was Mahmud Deobandi. He taught the very first lessons at the university. The first student to enroll and study there was Mahmud Hasan Deobandi. He later became a very famous scholar himself.
Role in India's Freedom
The university played a big part in India's fight for independence from British rule. Its leaders and students supported the idea of a united India. They were against the idea of splitting India into two separate countries. This plan was known as the Two-state solution.
