Datteln is a town located in the North Rhine-Westphalia state of Germany. In 2011, about 34,481 people lived there. Datteln is part of the Recklinghausen Rural District. It is famous for being a major meeting point for canals.
Datteln: A Town of Canals
Datteln is special because it sits where four important canals meet. These are the Datteln-Hamm Canal, the Wesel-Datteln Canal, the Dortmund-Ems Canal, and the Rhein-Herne Canal. This makes Datteln home to the largest canal junction in the entire world! Canals are like man-made rivers that help boats move goods and people.
The Datteln Power Plant
Datteln also has a very large power plant. It's called the E-on power plant. This plant uses coal to create electricity. It is known as one of the most modern coal-fired power plants in the world. Sometimes, big power plants like this can be a topic of discussion due to their environmental impact.
