The distribution of the Daurian hedgehog |
Some groups worry about the Daurian hedgehog's future. It's listed in Russia's "Red Book" as a protected animal. This means people are trying to keep it safe. However, the IUCN (a big international group that checks animal populations) says it's of "least concern." This means they don't think it's in immediate danger.

Where Daurian Hedgehogs Live
Daurian hedgehogs live in the Transbaikal region of Russia. They also live in northern Mongolia. They make their homes in dens. You can find them in both forests and wide-open grasslands. These grasslands are called steppes.
Choosing a Home
Hedgehogs often pick scrublands and rocky areas. These spots give them good places to hide. It helps them stay safe from animals that might try to hunt them. Daurian hedgehogs are known to roam over larger areas than other types of hedgehogs.
What Daurian Hedgehogs Are Like
An adult Daurian hedgehog is about 15 to 20 centimeters long. That's about the length of a school ruler. They usually weigh around 600 grams, but can be up to 1 kilogram. Most Daurian hedgehogs live for about six years in the wild.
Winter Sleep
Like many hedgehogs in colder places, the Daurian hedgehog takes a long nap in winter. This is called hibernation. They sleep through the cold months to save energy.
Protecting Daurian Hedgehogs
In the mid-1960s, the number of Daurian hedgehogs in Russia dropped a lot. This happened after people started using many pesticides. Pesticides are chemicals used to kill insects, but they can harm other animals too.
Coming Back Stronger
Since that time, the hedgehog population has slowly started to grow again. It's not back to its original size yet. But it's a good sign that they are recovering.
Moving to New Places
Now, these hedgehogs seem to be moving north. They are also moving closer to cities. This might be because there's more food there. There's also less danger from farm activities. People are also becoming more accepting of them living nearby.
Scientists have even tried moving some adult hedgehogs to new areas. This has helped start new groups of hedgehogs in those places. Because the areas where they live are so big and not many people live there, it's hard to know exactly how many Daurian hedgehogs there are. Their full status is still a bit unclear.
