David Patrick Jauss, born on January 16, 1957, is an American baseball coach and scout. He works as an advisor for the Washington Nationals team. He has also coached for many other well-known teams like the New York Mets and Boston Red Sox.

Dave Jauss's Early Life and College Years
Dave Jauss went to Amherst College. There, he played baseball and basketball. He was even the captain of both teams!
At Amherst, he was teammates with Dan Duquette. Dan later became a general manager in Major League Baseball (MLB). After Amherst, Dave also studied at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
Coaching in College
Before coaching professional teams, Jauss coached college baseball. He was the head coach at Westfield State College from 1982 to 1984. Then, he coached at Atlantic Christian College from 1985 to 1987.
Dave Jauss's Professional Baseball Career
In 1988, Dave Jauss started working in professional baseball. He was hired by the Montreal Expos to manage teams in their minor league system. Minor league teams help young players get ready for the big leagues.
Managing Minor League Teams
From 1988 to 1994, Jauss managed several minor league teams. These included the Gulf Coast Expos and the Harrisburg Senators. He had a great record, winning 188 games and losing 151. In 1994, he was named the Manager of the Year for the Eastern League.
He also managed winter baseball in the Dominican Republic. In 1999, he led a team called Licey to win the Caribbean Series title. This is a big championship for teams from Caribbean countries.
Working with Major League Teams
In 1995, Jauss worked for the Baltimore Orioles. He helped develop their young players. The next year, he joined the Boston Red Sox as an advance scout. This meant he would watch other teams to help the Red Sox prepare.
Coaching in Major League Baseball
In 1997, Dave Jauss became the first base coach for the Red Sox. He held this job until 1999. He also worked as the Red Sox's minor league field coordinator. In 2001, he became the Red Sox's bench coach.
From 2003 to 2005, he was a Major League advance scout for the Red Sox. He played a part in the team winning the 2004 World Series. This was a huge win for the Red Sox!
After the Red Sox, Jauss coached for other MLB teams:
- He was the bench coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2006 to 2007.
- He then coached for the Baltimore Orioles from 2008 to 2009.
- In 2010, he was the bench coach for the New York Mets.
- He also worked as a scout and coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 2013 to 2019.
In 2020, Jauss returned to the New York Mets as their bench coach for the 2021 season. During the 2021 All-Star Game, he even pitched to Pete Alonso in the Home Run Derby. Alonso won the derby!
Since 2022, Dave Jauss has been a senior advisor for the Washington Nationals. He helps with their player development system.
Dave Jauss's Family Life
Dave Jauss's father was Bill Jauss. Bill was a famous sportswriter for the Chicago Tribune. He also appeared on a TV show called The Sportswriters on TV.
Dave's son, D.J., also plays baseball. He was drafted by the Washington Nationals in 2014.
