David Patrick Jauss (born January 16, 1957) is an American baseball coach and scout. He helps baseball teams find and train players. Right now, he works as an advisor for the Washington Nationals. He has also coached for many other famous teams like the New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, Baltimore Orioles, and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Dave Jauss's College Days
Dave Jauss went to Amherst College. There, he played baseball and basketball. He was even the captain of both teams! One of his teammates was Dan Duquette, who later became a general manager in Major League Baseball.
Jauss studied psychology at Amherst. He also earned a master's degree in Sport Management from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. After college, he became a head baseball coach. He coached at Westfield State College from 1982 to 1984. Then, he coached at Atlantic Christian College from 1985 to 1987.
Dave Jauss's Baseball Career
In 1988, Dave Jauss started working in professional baseball. He became a manager in the Montreal Expos' minor league system. Minor league teams help young players get ready for the big leagues.
Managing Minor League Teams
From 1988 to 1994, Jauss managed several minor league teams. These included the Gulf Coast Expos, West Palm Beach Expos, and Harrisburg Senators. He had a great record, winning 188 games and losing 151. In 1994, he was named the Eastern League Manager of the Year.
He also managed baseball teams in the Dominican Republic during the winter. In 1999, he led a team called Licey to win the Caribbean Series title. He was named Manager of the Year that winter too.
Working with Major League Teams
In 1995, Jauss worked for the Baltimore Orioles. He helped with player development. The next year, he joined the Boston Red Sox as an advance scout. An advance scout watches other teams to help their own team prepare.
Coaching in Major League Baseball
In 1997, Jauss became the first base coach for the Red Sox. He held this job until 1999. He then worked as a minor league field coordinator for the Red Sox in 2000 and 2001. In 2001, he became the Red Sox bench coach.
From 2003 to 2005, he was the Red Sox's Major League advance scout again. He played a part in the Red Sox winning the 2004 World Series.
In 2006, Jauss became the bench coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He stayed with them through 2007. From 2008 to 2009, he was the bench coach for the Baltimore Orioles.
In 2010, he was the bench coach for the New York Mets. Later, in 2011, he joined the Pittsburgh Pirates as a professional scout. He returned to coaching in 2013 and served as the Pirates' bench coach in 2016.
On December 13, 2020, it was announced that Jauss would return to the New York Mets as their bench coach for the 2021 season. On July 12, 2021, Jauss even pitched to Pete Alonso when Alonso won the 2021 Major League Baseball Home Run Derby.
Since January 18, 2022, Dave Jauss has been a senior advisor for the Washington Nationals. He helps with their player development system.
Dave Jauss's Family Life
Dave Jauss is the son of Bill Jauss. His father was a well-known sportswriter for the Chicago Tribune. Bill Jauss also appeared on a TV show called The Sportswriters on TV.
Dave's son, D.J., was also drafted by the Washington Nationals in 2014.
