David Lawrence Angell (born April 10, 1946 – died September 11, 2001) was an American writer and producer for television. He won many Emmy Awards. These awards were for shows he helped create and produce. Some of his most famous shows include Wings and Frasier. He worked on these with Peter Casey and David Lee.
David Angell and his wife, Lynn, were on a plane returning from vacation. This plane was American Airlines Flight 11. Sadly, it was the first plane to hit the World Trade Center during the September 11 attacks.
Early Life and Education
David Angell was born in Providence, Rhode Island. His parents were Henry and Mae Angell. He went to Providence College. There, he earned a degree in English literature.
He married Lynn Edwards on August 14, 1971. After college, David joined the United States Army. He worked at the Pentagon until 1972. Later, he lived in Boston and worked for an engineering company. He also worked for an insurance company in Rhode Island. His brother, Kenneth Angell, was a Roman Catholic bishop. He was the Bishop of Burlington, Vermont.
Television Career
In 1977, David Angell moved to Los Angeles. He wanted to work in television. His first script was sold for a show called Annie Flynn. Five years later, he sold another script. This was for the sitcom Archie Bunker's Place.
In 1983, he joined the writing team for Cheers. This was a very popular TV show. By 1985, Angell teamed up with Peter Casey and David Lee. They became supervising producers and writers for Cheers. This team was very successful. They received 37 Emmy Award nominations. They won 24 Emmy Awards together. This included awards for Frasier. They also won an Emmy for Cheers as Outstanding Comedy Series in 1989. David Angell also won an Emmy for writing on Cheers in 1984.
After Cheers, Angell, Casey, and Lee started their own company. It was called Grub Street Productions. In 1990, they created and produced the comedy series Wings. They also created the hit show Frasier.
Tragic Death
David Angell and his wife, Lynn, died on September 11, 2001. They were victims of the September 11 attacks. They were on American Airlines Flight 11. This plane crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in Manhattan. Everyone on that plane died.
Interestingly, in a 1997 episode of Frasier, which Angell helped write, a character mentions arriving on "American Flight 11."
Legacy and Remembrance

The American Screenwriters Association gives out an award each year. It is called the David Angell Humanitarian Award. This award honors people in the entertainment industry. It is given to those who help make the world better. They do this by giving their time, skills, or support.
In 2004, The Angell Foundation gave a large gift to Providence College. They donated $2 million for the Smith Center for the Arts.
After the September 11 attacks, two episodes of Frasier aired. The first was "Don Juan in Hell" on September 25, 2001. It ended with a special message. It said, "In loving memory of our friends Lynn and David Angell." The final episode of Frasier, called "Goodnight, Seattle", aired on May 13, 2004. In this episode, Niles Crane and Daphne Moon have a son. They name him David, in tribute to David Angell.
At the National 9/11 Memorial, David Angell and his wife are remembered. Their names are on Panel N-1 of the North Pool. This is where other passengers from Flight 11 are also honored.
