About David Braid

David Braid is a Canadian composer and jazz pianist. Many people say he is one of Canada's most creative musicians.

After finishing his studies at the University of Toronto in 1998, David Braid started playing his own music. He formed a band called the "David Braid Sextet" in 1999. This band included John MacLeod, Mike Murley, Gene Smith, Steve Wallace, and Terry Clarke.

Music and Awards

The David Braid Sextet made three albums. Their second album, Vivid: The David Braid Sextet Live, won a big award called the Juno Award for Traditional Jazz Album of the Year in 2005. Several of his other albums, like Mnemosyne's March and Spirit Dance, were also nominated for Juno Awards.

In 2017, David Braid won two Canadian Screen Awards for his work on the movie Born to Be Blue. He won for "Best Original Score" (the background music) and "Best Original Song." In 2018, his album "The North" won another Juno Award for Best Jazz Album (Group).

David Braid also writes classical music. His first classical work, Corona Divinae Misericordiae, was nominated for a Juno Award in 2019.

Solo Work and New Directions

Even though David Braid was famous for jazz, he started exploring different types of music. He released a solo piano album called Verge in 2011. This album, which featured only his piano playing, also won a Juno Award for Traditional Jazz Album of the Year.

In 2014, David Braid began working with a group called Sinfonia UK Collective. He toured with them in the UK and Canada. This showed how he likes to try new things with music.

He also worked with the Epoque String Quartet on his 2016 album, FLOW. This album was released by Steinway & Sons, a famous piano company. David Braid also received a special award in 2016 for his amazing piano playing.

A close friend and helper, Dr Lee Tsang, has worked with David Braid on many projects. He has helped write lyrics for songs and even produced one of David's albums.
