David Clements Fulton (born February 1, 1838 – died March 30, 1899) was an American businessman. He came from Hudson, Wisconsin. He held many important jobs in his town. He also served in the Wisconsin State Assembly. He was a member of the Liberal Republican Party.

Early Life and Business

David Fulton was born in Bethel, New York on February 1, 1838. He went to a good school. In 1854, his family moved to Hudson, Wisconsin. His father started a large business there.

When David's father died in 1858, David and his brother Marcus took over the family business. Marcus later became a state senator. David was involved in many types of business. He also bought and sold land.

Serving in the Civil War

During the American Civil War, David Fulton helped gather a group of volunteer soldiers. They were from St. Croix County. In July 1862, he became a captain. He led Company 'D' of the 30th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment.

His company was sent to different places. First, they were in Wisconsin. Then, they went to Fort Sully in Dakota Territory. In October 1864, Captain Fulton was promoted to major. He joined the 1st Wisconsin Heavy Artillery Regiment. He served with this new group in Virginia until the war ended. He left the army on June 26, 1865.

A Public Servant

After the war, David Fulton held many public jobs in Hudson. He was the mayor for one term. He also served on the St. Croix County Board of Supervisors. He was a member of the school board and an alderman (a city council member).

In 1872, he was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly. He represented St. Croix County. He was a Liberal Republican. He won with 1,432 votes. The regular Republican candidate, B. C. B. Foster, received 1,132 votes. David Fulton served one year in the Assembly. He worked on committees for the militia (citizen soldiers) and on engrossed bills (final versions of proposed laws).

He did not run for re-election in 1874. Harvey Clapp, a Republican, took his place.

Life After Politics

After his time in the Assembly, Fulton helped manage the National Homes for Disabled Soldiers for six years. These homes cared for soldiers who were injured in the war. He also worked as a United States Marshal for Western Wisconsin. This was during President Grover Cleveland's first term (1885–1889). A U.S. Marshal is a federal law enforcement officer.

Later, he became the Cashier and then the President of the First National Bank of Hudson. He was also the President of the Board of Trustees for the St. Croix County Asylum. He held these last two jobs when he passed away.

David and Marcus Fulton continued their family businesses together. This lasted until Marcus died in 1892. After that, David focused on his own interests. David Clements Fulton died on March 30, 1899, in Chicago. He had gone there to visit his son, Marcus.
