Who is David Cage?
David Cage was born in Mulhouse, France. He is the leader of the game development studio Quantic Dream. He plays a very important role in the company. He is the founder, a co-CEO, the director, the main game designer, and the writer for their games.
Before making video games, David Cage was a professional musician. In 1993, he started his own company called Totem Interactive. This company focused on music and sound for different projects. He worked on music for TV shows, movies, and video games.
His Early Work
Some of his first projects included making music for video games like Super Dany (1994) and Cheese Cat-Astrophe Starring Speedy Gonzales (1995). He also worked on Timecop (1995) and Hardline (1996).
In 1997, David Cage left Totem Interactive to create Quantic Dream. Since then, he has written and directed all the main games released by his studio.
Games He Created
Here are some of the games David Cage has directed and written:
- Omikron: The Nomad Soul (1999)
- Fahrenheit / Indigo Prophecy (2005)
- Heavy Rain (2010)
- Beyond: Two Souls (2013)
- Detroit: Become Human (2018)
His Ideas About Games
David Cage believes that video games can tell many different kinds of stories. At the 7th British Academy Games Awards, where Heavy Rain won three awards, he said that games often explore the same themes. He thinks games can do much more than just being about heroes fighting bad guys. He believes games can tell many other stories and make players feel many different emotions.
Another game developer, Warren Spector, has called David Cage one of the best storytellers in the game industry. Cage also thinks that "game over" screens can sometimes be a problem in story-focused games. He feels they can break the story's flow.
Awards and Recognition
David Cage was the first game developer to receive the Legion of Honour. This is the highest award given in France. In October 2018, he also received a Ping Honor Award for his long career in gaming.
