About David Cage
David Cage was born in Mulhouse, France. He leads the game developer studio Quantic Dream. He is the founder, co-CEO, director, lead game designer, and screenwriter for the company. This means he plays a very important role in creating their games.
Early Career in Music
Before making video games, David Cage was a professional musician. In 1993, he started a company called Totem Interactive. This company focused on music and sound. He worked as a freelance musician, creating music for television shows, movies, and video games.
His early music work included creating soundtracks for Cryo Interactive video games. These games were Super Dany (1994), Cheese Cat-Astrophe Starring Speedy Gonzales (1995), Timecop (1995), and Hardline (1996).
Founding Quantic Dream
David Cage left Totem Interactive and started Quantic Dream in 1997. Since then, he has written and directed all five games released by his studio. These games are Omikron: The Nomad Soul (1999), Fahrenheit / Indigo Prophecy (2005), Heavy Rain (2010), Beyond: Two Souls (2013), and Detroit: Become Human (2018).
His Vision for Games
At the 7th British Academy Games Awards, Heavy Rain won three awards. David Cage shared his thoughts on video games there. He said that games often explore similar themes, like being powerful or good versus evil. He believes games can do much more. He thinks there are many other stories to tell and emotions to create using this amazing new medium. Game developer Warren Spector has called Cage one of the best storytellers in the industry.
Cage has also mentioned that "game over" screens in story-based games are not ideal. He sees them as a sign that the game design could be improved.
Awards and Recognition
David Cage was the first game developer to receive the Legion of Honour. This is the highest award given in France. In October 2018, he also received a Ping Honor Award for his work in the video game industry.
