David John MacRae Carnegie, the 14th Earl of Northesk, was an important British politician and landowner. He was born on November 3, 1954, and passed away on March 28, 2010. From 1975 to 1994, he was known as Lord Rosehill. He was a member of the House of Lords, which is part of the UK Parliament.
About David Carnegie
David Carnegie was the second son of Robert Carnegie, who was the 13th Earl of Northesk. His mother was Jean Margaret MacRae.
His Political Role
Lord Northesk became the Earl of Northesk when his father died in 1994. This meant he also became a member of the House of Lords. In the House of Lords, he was part of the Conservative Party.
Later, a new law called the House of Lords Act 1999 changed how members were chosen. Many hereditary peers (people who inherited their titles) lost their automatic right to be in the House of Lords. However, Lord Northesk was one of 92 hereditary peers who were elected to stay.
In Parliament, he often spoke about important issues like civil liberties and privacy. He was against the Identity Cards Act 2006, which would have created ID cards for everyone. He also disagreed with new laws about online copyright, like those in the Digital Economy Act 2010.
His Family Life
In 1979, Lord Northesk married Jacqueline Dundas Reid. They had four children together:
- Alexander Robert Macrae Carnegie, Lord Rosehill (born November 16, 1980, died August 31, 2001)
- Lady Sarah Louise Mary Carnegie (born October 29, 1982)
- Lady Fiona Jean Elizabeth Carnegie (born March 24, 1987)
- Lady Sophie Margaret Jean Carnegie (born January 9, 1990)
His only son, Alexander, passed away at the age of 20 in 2001.
Lord Northesk died from cancer when he was 55 years old. After his death, his eighth cousin once removed, Patrick Carnegy, became the 15th Earl of Northesk. Because Lord Northesk's seat in the House of Lords became empty, a special election was held to choose a new Conservative hereditary peer to take his place.
