Early Life and Education
Patrick Charles Carnegy is the son of Patrick Charles Alexander Carnegy and Joyce Eleanor Townsley. He is related to the earlier Earls of Northesk. He became the 15th Earl of Northesk when his distant cousin, David Carnegie, 14th Earl of Northesk, passed away on March 28, 2010.
He attended Rugby School, a well-known boarding school. Later, in 1960, he began his studies at Trinity Hall, Cambridge University.

Working at The Times Literary Supplement
From 1969 to 1978, he worked as an assistant editor for The Times Literary Supplement (often called TLS). This is a famous newspaper that focuses on books and literature.
Broadcasting and Radio Work
In the 1970s and 1980s, he was a regular contributor to the BBC Radio 4 arts show called Kaleidoscope. He also created documentaries for BBC Radio 3. These included programs about famous writers like Thomas Mann and Franz Kafka. He also discussed opera, such as the Barenboim/Kupfer Ring at Bayreuth in 1988. Role at the Royal Opera House
In 1988, he was invited by Jeremy Isaacs to create a new position at the Royal Opera House. This role was called Dramaturg, which means he was an adviser on literary and artistic matters. In this role, he started a program of lectures, study days, and other events that were open to the public. He also received a special research grant, called a Leverhulme Research Fellowship, from 1994 to 1996.

It won awards, including a Royal Philharmonic Society Award and a Special Jury Prize George Freedley Memorial Award.

Lord Northesk lives in Cambridgeshire with his wife, Jill Gomez. Jill Gomez is a talented opera singer known as a soprano. They do not have any children.
The person who would inherit the earldom after Lord Northesk is his younger brother, Colin David Carnegy, who was born in 1942.
