The David Carpenter House is a historic building in Blissfield, Michigan. It was once a private home. Today, it is a restaurant known as the Hathaway House. You can find it at 424 West Adrian Street.
This special house was named a Michigan State Historic Site on August 13, 1971. Later, it was also added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 20, 1979. These titles mean it's an important part of history!
A Historic Home in Blissfield
The David Carpenter House was built around 1851. It is a large and impressive building. It was designed in the Greek Revival style. This style was very popular in the mid-1800s. It often features columns and grand entrances, like ancient Greek temples.
Who Was David Carpenter?
The house was built by David Carpenter. He was originally from New York. Carpenter moved to Lenawee County in 1838. He became one of the most important people in the area. He was a successful merchant.
When it was first built, the house was huge. It had 18 rooms! Imagine a house with so many spaces. These included several parlors, a dining room, and a library. There were also three kitchens and five bedrooms. Over time, some walls were removed. This made certain rooms even larger. A second story was added to the side wings not long after the house was finished.
From Home to Hathaway House
David Carpenter lived in this grand house for many years. He stayed there from 1851 until he passed away in 1891. After his death, the house stayed in his family for a while.
Around the year 1900, the Hathaway family bought the house. It remained a private home until 1960. That year, the Weeber family bought it. They decided to turn it into a restaurant. This is how it became the Hathaway House restaurant.
In 1995, the building got a new addition. A back parlor and a new back porch were added. Today, the restaurant has many dining areas. There are three dining rooms and two parlors on the main floor. Upstairs, you'll find three more dining rooms and a ballroom. The outside of the house still looks much like it did when it was first built.
