Who Was David Cecil?

David Cecil was born around the year 1600. His father was Sir Richard Cecil. The family lived in a place called Wakerley in Northamptonshire, England.

His Early Life and Education

David went to Clare College, Cambridge, which is a famous university. After that, he studied law at a place called Lincoln's Inn in 1627. This training helped him understand the laws of the country.

Becoming an Earl

In 1640, David Cecil became a Member of Parliament (MP). This meant he was chosen to represent the town of Peterborough in the Short Parliament. The Parliament was a group of people who helped make laws for the country.

Later that same year, in July 1640, David inherited a very important title. He became the 3rd Earl of Exeter. He received this title from his uncle, William Cecil, 2nd Earl of Exeter. This made him a powerful figure in English society.

His Family Life

David Cecil married a woman named Elizabeth Egerton. She was the daughter of John Egerton, 1st Earl of Bridgewater. They had a daughter named Lady Frances Cecil. She later married Anthony Ashley Cooper, 1st Earl of Shaftesbury. David Cecil passed away in 1643. His son, John Cecil, 4th Earl of Exeter, then became the next Earl.
