David Henry Drummond (born 11 February 1890, died 13 June 1965) was an Australian politician. He was also a farmer. David Drummond was a member of the Country Party. He served in two important government groups. These were the New South Wales Legislative Assembly and the Australian House of Representatives.
David Drummond's Early Life
David Drummond was born in Lewisham, a part of Sydney. He went to public schools. He also attended The Scots College. However, his family faced money problems. This meant he had to start working early. In 1902, he became a "ward of the state." This means the government helped look after him.
In 1907, he moved to Armidale. There, he worked as a farm-hand. In 1913, he married Pearl Hilda Victoria Goode. Her father was a grazier, which is a type of farmer.
David Drummond in State Politics
David Drummond started his political career in state government. In 1920, he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. This group makes laws for the state of New South Wales. He represented the area called Northern Tablelands. He was part of the Progressive Party. This party later became the Country Party.
From 1927 to 1949, he represented the Armidale area. He was a founding member of the New England New State Movement. This movement wanted to create a new state in Australia.
David Drummond was also the Minister for Education. He held this job from 1927 to 1930 and again from 1932 to 1941. As Minister, he did many important things for schools. In the 1930s, he started the Armidale Teachers' College. This college trained new teachers. He also helped create the University of New England in 1937.
David Drummond in Federal Politics
In 1949, David Drummond decided to work in federal politics. This means he worked for the whole country. He was elected to the Australian House of Representatives. This is one of the main groups that makes laws for all of Australia. He represented the area called New England.
David Drummond retired from politics in 1963. He passed away in Armidale in 1965.
