Dwight David Eisenhower II (born March 31, 1948) is an American author and professor. He is known for being the namesake of Camp David, a special retreat for U.S. presidents. David Eisenhower is the grandson of President Dwight D. Eisenhower and First Lady Mamie Eisenhower. He is also the son-in-law of President Richard Nixon and First Lady Pat Nixon.

Dwight David Eisenhower II is usually called David. He was named after his famous grandfather, Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was often called "Ike." David was born on March 31, 1948, in West Point, New York. His parents were Barbara (Thompson) and John Eisenhower. He was their only son and the oldest of four children.

His father, John Eisenhower, was an officer in the United States Army. His grandfather, Dwight D. Eisenhower, was a top general during World War II. He later became the 34th president of the United States. After becoming president in 1953, President Eisenhower renamed the presidential mountain retreat. It used to be called Camp Shangri-La. He renamed it Camp David, partly after his grandson, David.

David Eisenhower's Education and Career

David Eisenhower finished high school at Phillips Exeter Academy in 1966. He then went to Amherst College, where he studied history. He earned his degree in 1970. While there, he sang in a college singing group called the Zumbyes.

After college, he served for three years as an officer in the United States Naval Reserve. During this time, he was on a ship called the USS Albany in the Mediterranean Sea. Later, he earned a law degree from The George Washington University Law School in 1976.

Today, David Eisenhower teaches at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. He is also an author. He helps lead the History Institute for Teachers at the Foreign Policy Research Institute.

In 1987, David Eisenhower was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in history. This was for his book called Eisenhower At War, 1943-1945. The book was about the leaders of the Allied forces during World War II. He also hosts a TV show called The Whole Truth with David Eisenhower.

On December 22, 1968, David Eisenhower married Julie Nixon. Julie is the daughter of Richard Nixon, who was then the President-elect. Richard Nixon had served as David's grandfather's vice president. David and Julie had known each other since 1956. They met at the 1956 Republican National Convention.

David and Julie Eisenhower live in Berwyn, Pennsylvania. They have three children:

  • Jennie Elizabeth Eisenhower (born August 15, 1978), who is an actress.
  • Alexander Richard Eisenhower (born 1980).
  • Melanie Catherine Eisenhower (born 1984).

They also have three grandchildren.
