Dwight David Eisenhower II (born March 31, 1948) is an American author and professor. He teaches at the University of Pennsylvania. He is also famous because the U.S. presidential retreat, Camp David, was named after him!

David is the grandson of President Dwight D. Eisenhower and First Lady Mamie Eisenhower. He is also the son-in-law of President Richard Nixon and First Lady Pat Nixon.

David Eisenhower was born on March 31, 1948. His full name is Dwight David Eisenhower II. He was named after his famous grandfather, Ike.

David was born in West Point, New York. His parents were Barbara (Thompson) and John Eisenhower. He was their first child and only son.

His father, John Eisenhower, was an officer in the United States Army. He later became a brigadier general. He also served as the U.S. Ambassador to Belgium. John Eisenhower was a well-known military historian too.

David's grandfather, Dwight D. Eisenhower, was a very important person. He was the Supreme Allied Commander during World War II. This means he led the Allied forces in Europe. After the war, he became president of Columbia University. Then, from 1953 to 1961, he was the 34th President of the United States.

How Camp David Got Its Name

When his grandfather became president in 1953, he made a special change. He renamed the presidential mountain retreat. It used to be called Camp Shangri-La. President Eisenhower renamed it Camp David after his grandson, David.

David Eisenhower's Education and Career

David Eisenhower went to Phillips Exeter Academy and graduated in 1966. He then studied history at Amherst College. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1970.

After college, he joined the United States Naval Reserve. He served as an officer for three years. During this time, he was on the ship USS Albany in the Mediterranean Sea.

Later, he went to The George Washington University Law School. He earned his law degree (J.D.) in 1976.

What Does David Eisenhower Do Now?

Today, David Eisenhower teaches at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. He is also a public policy fellow there. He writes books and articles.

He is a co-chair for the History Institute for Teachers at the Foreign Policy Research Institute. From 2001 to 2003, he was the editor of Orbis. This is a quarterly journal published by the institute.

David Eisenhower is a respected author. He was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in history in 1987. This was for his book Eisenhower At War, 1943-1945. The book is about the leadership of the Allied forces during World War II.

He also hosts a public television show. It is called The Whole Truth with David Eisenhower. American Public Television distributes this show.

David Eisenhower's Family Life

On December 22, 1968, David Eisenhower married Julie Nixon. Julie is the daughter of Richard Nixon. At the time, Richard Nixon was the President-elect. He had also served as David's grandfather's vice president.

David and Julie had known each other for a long time. They first met at the 1956 Republican National Convention. Their wedding took place at the Marble Collegiate Church in New York City.

David and Julie Eisenhower live in Berwyn, Pennsylvania. They have three children:
