Who Was David Finlay?
David Finlay was born in Guardbridge, Fife, Scotland. His father, George Finlay, was a shepherd. David joined the British Army and became a lance-corporal. He served in the 2nd Battalion of The Black Watch (Royal Highlanders). This was during the First World War.
A Heroic Act
On 9 May 1915, a big battle was happening near Rue du Bois in France. Lance-Corporal Finlay was leading a group of 12 soldiers. Their job was to attack the enemy.
As they fought, 10 of his men were hurt or fell. Only two soldiers were left with him. David Finlay told the two remaining soldiers to go back to safety.
Then, he saw a wounded soldier who needed help. Without thinking about his own safety, David Finlay went to rescue him. He carried the injured man for about 100 yards. This area was very dangerous, with bullets flying everywhere. He managed to get the wounded soldier to a safe place.
Later Life and Legacy
Because of his incredible bravery, David Finlay was given the Victoria Cross. He was also promoted to the rank of sergeant.
Sadly, Sergeant Finlay was killed in action on 21 January 1916. This happened in a place called Mesopotamia, which is now part of Iraq. He was only 22 years old.
David Finlay is remembered on the Basra Memorial in Iraq. This memorial honors soldiers who died in that area and have no known grave.
Remembering a Hero
David Finlay's bravery is still remembered today. There is a war memorial in Moonzie Kirkyard in Fife that honors him.
In his home village of Guardbridge, there is a special memorial stone. It is placed in the children's play park. A street in Guardbridge has also been named after him.
The Victoria Cross Medal
David Finlay's Victoria Cross medal is a very important piece of history. You can see it on display at the Black Watch Museum. This museum is located in Balhousie Castle in Perth, Scotland.
