David Frankel is a retired professor of archaeology at La Trobe University in Australia. He is known for his work in archaeology, especially in Cyprus and Australia. He has received many awards for his important contributions to understanding the past.

David Frankel's Early Life and Studies

David Frankel studied archaeology at the University of Sydney in Australia. He also studied at Gothenburg University in Sweden. There, he focused on the ancient history of Cyprus, a large island in the Mediterranean Sea.

After his studies, David worked at the British Museum in London from 1975 to 1978. He helped study ancient objects from Western Asia. In 1978, he returned to Australia to teach at La Trobe University.

As a student, David helped dig at many important sites. He excavated in New Zealand and Israel. He also worked at Irrawang Pottery and Elizabeth Farm House in New South Wales, Australia. He even joined two digs at Zagora in Greece.

Important Work and Awards

In 1993, David Frankel became a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities. This is a special group that recognizes experts in humanities. From 1996 to 1998, he helped the Australian Research Council decide which research projects should get funding.

David received the Prime Minister’s Centenary Award in 2003. This award was for his great work benefiting Australian society and the humanities. He also helped edit a journal called Studies in Mediterranean Archaeology.

In 2015, David won the Rhys Jones Medal from the Australian Archaeological Association. This award is given for amazing contributions to archaeology.

David Frankel is very interested in two main areas of archaeology. He studies the history of Australian Aboriginal people, especially in southeastern Australia. He also researches the Bronze Age in Cyprus. The Bronze Age was a time when people started using bronze tools.

He has led or joined many important archaeological digs. In Papua New Guinea, he worked on a site. In Australia, he excavated at Moonlight Head midden and Koongine Cave. In Cyprus, he led digs at Marki Alonia, Deneia, and Politiko Kokkinorotsos. These digs helped us learn more about ancient cultures and how people lived long ago.
