David Hilditch (born 23 July 1963 – died 5 November 2023) was a politician from Northern Ireland. He was a Unionist and a member of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). David Hilditch served as a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for the area of East Antrim. He held this important role from 1998 until he retired in 2023 due to health reasons.

David Hilditch was born in Carrickfergus on 23 July 1963. Before becoming a politician, he worked in the building industry. He also worked for Royal Mail, which delivers letters and parcels. This was from 1987 to 1998. In 1997, he received a bravery award. This was for his actions during a difficult situation at a post office.

Starting in Local Politics

David Hilditch began his political career in 1991. He was first elected to the Carrickfergus Borough Council. A council is a group of people who manage a town or area. In 1995, he became the deputy mayor. A mayor is the leader of a town or city council. He was then elected as mayor in 1997. He also served as mayor again from 2004 to 2008.

Serving in the Assembly

In 1998, David Hilditch was elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly. This is where laws are made for Northern Ireland. He represented the East Antrim area. He was re-elected in 2003 and 2007.

He was very active in the Assembly. From 1998 to 2003, he asked many questions. He also worked on committees. These committees look closely at different topics. He was the vice-chair of the Social Development Committee. He also served on the Standards and Privileges Committee. He was also a member of the Employment and Learning Committee.

David Hilditch was also the secretary of Carrick Rangers Football Club. This shows his interest in local sports. He was re-elected to the Assembly in 2017. He was also elected again in 2022.

Later Life and Passing

David Hilditch was a member of the Apprentice Boys. In 2019, his son, Stuart, passed away. He had been battling a serious illness for three years.

David Hilditch himself passed away on 5 November 2023. He was 60 years old. He died from cancer.
