David Jackson Bailey's Early Life
Bailey was born in Lexington, Georgia, in 1812. When he was about 17 years old, in 1829, he moved to Jackson, Georgia. He decided to study law to become a lawyer. By 1831, he had finished his studies and was allowed to practice law. This means he could help people with legal problems.
Serving His State and Country
Even before he turned 21, Bailey was chosen to be part of the Georgia General Assembly. This is like the state's main law-making group. However, he was too young to serve at that time.
Bailey also served as a captain in the military. He helped during two important conflicts: the Seminole Wars and the Creek Wars.
Bailey's Political Career
David Jackson Bailey spent many years working in government. He was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives in 1835 and again in 1847. He also served in the Georgia State Senate in 1838, 1849, and 1850.
Working in Congress
From 1839 to 1841, Bailey was the secretary of the Georgia Senate. He was also a delegate for the Democratic Party in 1839 and 1850.
In 1850, he was elected to represent Georgia in the United States House of Representatives. This is a major step, as it meant he was helping make laws for the whole country. He was re-elected for another term. His time in the U.S. Congress lasted from March 4, 1851, to March 3, 1855. He tried to get re-elected in 1854 but did not win.
The Civil War Years
After his time in Congress, Bailey returned to the Georgia Senate in 1855 and 1856. He even became the president of that group. He then went back to being a lawyer in Jackson, Georgia.
Georgia's Decision
In 1861, Bailey was a delegate at a very important meeting called The Georgia Secession Convention. At this meeting, states decided whether to leave the United States. Bailey voted for Georgia to leave and signed the Ordinance of Secession on January 19, 1861. This decision was a big step towards the American Civil War.
During the Civil War, Bailey joined the Confederate States Army. He became a colonel in the 30th Georgia Volunteer Infantry. In 1861, he moved to Griffin, Georgia.
Later Life and Passing
After the war, David Jackson Bailey continued to live in Griffin, Georgia. He passed away there on June 14, 1897. He was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery.
