David Lauder was 21 years old during World War I. He was a private in the 1/4th Battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers. His heroic act happened on 13 August 1915. This was during a battle at Cape Helles, Gallipoli, in Turkey.

Lauder was part of a group trying to take back a trench. They were using special bombs. One bomb was thrown but did not go far enough. It fell right among Lauder's group. There was no time to throw it away or cover it.

Private Lauder quickly put his foot on the bomb. This brave act kept the explosion from spreading. His foot was blown off, but the rest of his group was safe. His quick thinking saved his comrades from serious injury or death.
