David Lindsay, 10th Earl of Crawford (1527-1574), was an important Scottish landowner and a nobleman. He lived a long time ago, during a period of many changes in Scotland's history.
David Lindsay was the son of Alexander Lindsay, who was known as the Master of Crawford. His mother was Jean Sinclair. He was also the grandson of another important person, David Lindsay, 8th Earl of Crawford.
In 1558, David Lindsay became the Earl of Crawford. He received this important title after a relative, David Lindsay, 9th Earl of Crawford, passed away. Being an Earl meant he was a powerful noble with a lot of land and influence in Scotland.
David Lindsay was involved in the politics of his time. He was known to disagree with Mary, Queen of Scots. He was part of a group of nobles who opposed her rule. He was also involved in the events surrounding the death of Mary's secretary, David Rizzio. Later, in 1568, he traveled to Hampton Court in England. There, he spoke about his views concerning Mary, Queen of Scots. He also challenged another noble, Lord Herries of Terregles, during this time.
Family Life and Children
David Lindsay married Margaret Beaton in 1546. Margaret was the daughter of David Beaton, who was a very important church leader known as the Archbishop of St Andrews. They were married at Finavon Castle.
David and Margaret had several children who grew up to be important people themselves:
- David Lindsay, 11th Earl of Crawford: He became the next Earl of Crawford after his father.
- Alexander Lindsay, 1st Lord Spynie: He was given the title of Lord Spynie.
- Henry Lindsay, 13th Earl of Crawford: He also became an Earl later on. He worked for Anne of Denmark, who was the Queen of Scotland and England.
- Helen Lindsay: She married Sir David Lindsay of Edzell Castle.
- Sir John Lindsay of Ballinscho or Ballinshoe.
- Sir James Lindsay: He worked as a go-between for the Pope and King James in the early 1600s.
