David McDowall Grant lived a busy life. He was involved in the navy, politics, and government work. He was known for his service to the country.
Early Life and Family
David was born on July 20, 1761. He was the fifth son of William McDowall and Elizabeth Graham. His father, William McDowall, was a Member of Parliament for Renfrewshire.
David had two older brothers who were also important. One brother, William McDowall, was also a Member of Parliament. He represented areas like Renfrewshire and Ayrshire. Another brother, Hay MacDowall, became a high-ranking army officer.
In 1790, David married Eleanor Mary Grant. She was the daughter of Colonel Alexander Grant of Arndilly. When they married, David added "Grant" to his name.
David McDowall Grant joined the navy around 1778. He quickly moved up the ranks. By 1781, he was promoted to lieutenant. He retired from the navy as a commander in 1816.
One of his most notable moments was in 1782. He took part in a big naval battle called the Battle of the Saintes. This battle was near St Lucia in the West Indies. He served under Admiral Rodney and helped defeat the French fleet.
Serving in Parliament
In 1795, David became a Member of Parliament (MP). He represented Banffshire. He took over after Sir James Grant resigned.
David's time in Parliament was short. Records do not show him speaking or voting on any issues. He did not try to be re-elected in the 1796 general election.
Customs Collector in Jamaica
After his naval and political careers, David took on a new role. From 1810 to about 1836, he worked as a Collector of customs. This job was in Kingston, Jamaica. A customs collector helps manage goods coming into a country. They make sure taxes are paid on these goods.
Later Life and Legacy
David McDowall Grant passed away on June 27, 1841. There is a special plaque honoring him. You can find it in the old church at Boharm.
