David McIlveen's Political Journey
Becoming an MLA
David McIlveen was elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly in 2011. He represented the North Antrim area. An MLA is like a local representative who helps make laws for Northern Ireland.
Views on World Issues
McIlveen was very interested in how conflicts happen around the world. He paid special attention to the Middle East. He once spoke about the release of an Israeli soldier named Gilad Shalit. He also shared his thoughts on how prisoners were treated in that region.
He said he had "close ties with Israel." This was because he visited the area many times, both with his family when he was younger and later as a politician.
Leaving the Assembly
In the 2016 Assembly election, David McIlveen did not win his seat again. Another person from his own party, Phillip Logan, was elected instead.
What David McIlveen Did After Politics
Role in Policing
After leaving the Assembly, McIlveen became a member of the Northern Ireland Policing Board. He held this position from August 2015 to May 2017. This board helps to oversee policing in Northern Ireland.
Views on Brexit
He did not actively campaign with his party during the 2016 vote on whether the United Kingdom should leave the European Union. This vote is often called the Brexit referendum. McIlveen said he wanted to see changes, rather than fully supporting leaving.
Speaking Out
In January 2017, McIlveen openly criticized the leader of his party, Arlene Foster. She was the First Minister of Northern Ireland at the time. He disagreed with how she handled a government scheme called the Renewable Heating Incentive (RHI). He called the situation a "mess" and felt she had not understood how angry the public was about it.
Before the 2017 Assembly election, he supported a different candidate, Robin Swann, from the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP). This was instead of supporting candidates from his own DUP party in North Antrim.
Back to Business
Since leaving politics in 2017, David McIlveen has returned to working in the private sector. He now runs several businesses, mostly dealing with property. He currently lives outside of Northern Ireland.

David McIlveen is the son of Reverend David McIlveen. His father is a well-known minister in the Free Presbyterian Church of Ulster. David McIlveen himself has not often spoken publicly about issues connected to his father's high-profile work.
