He served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the area of North Antrim. He held this position from 2011 to 2016.
Political Career
David McIlveen was first elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly in 2011. He represented the North Antrim area.
He has a strong interest in studying conflicts, especially those in the Middle East. He has visited the region many times, both on his own and with political groups.
In the 2016 Assembly election, David McIlveen did not win his seat again. Another candidate from his own party, Phillip Logan, was elected instead.
After Politics
After leaving the Assembly, David McIlveen continued to be involved in public life for a short time.
From August 2015 to May 2017, he was a political member of the Northern Ireland Policing Board. This board helps to oversee policing in Northern Ireland.
In 2016, there was a big public vote called the 2016 Brexit referendum. This vote was about whether the UK should leave the European Union. David McIlveen did not actively campaign with his party for this vote. He said he wanted to see changes rather than a complete exit.
In January 2017, he spoke out about a public issue known as the Renewable Heating Incentive (RHI) scheme. He felt that the leader of his party, Arlene Foster, had not handled the situation well.
Before the 2017 Assembly election, he supported Robin Swann of the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP). This was unusual because Swann was not a candidate from McIlveen's own DUP party in North Antrim.
Since 2017, David McIlveen has left politics. He now works in the private sector, running different companies. Many of his businesses are involved in property. He currently lives outside of Northern Ireland.
