David Miquel Mendes da Silva Gonçalves (born 4 August 1982) is a Dutch former professional footballer. He played as a midfielder and was known for his skills in dribbling and tackling. During his career, he played for several well-known clubs, including Red Bull Salzburg, AZ, Sparta Rotterdam, Ajax, Panathinaikos, and NAC Breda.

Club Football Journey
Early Career at Sparta Rotterdam
David Mendes da Silva began his football journey in his hometown of Rotterdam, Netherlands. He joined the youth system of Sparta Rotterdam and worked his way up. He signed his first professional contract with the club in 1999. He played for Sparta Rotterdam until 2004. During this time, he also had a short loan spell at Ajax in 2003, but he did not play in any official matches for them.
Moving to NAC Breda
After leaving Sparta Rotterdam, Mendes da Silva joined NAC Breda. He played for them for two seasons, from 2004 to 2006. During his time at NAC Breda, he played in 56 matches and scored five goals.
Success with AZ Alkmaar
In 2006, David Mendes da Silva signed a five-year contract with AZ Alkmaar. He became a regular player for AZ and stayed with the club for four seasons. This was a very successful period for him and the team. AZ won the Dutch league title, known as the Eredivisie, in the 2008–09 season. Overall, he played 119 matches for AZ and scored 11 goals across all competitions.

Time at Red Bull Salzburg
In 2010, Mendes da Silva moved to FC Red Bull Salzburg in Austria. The coach, Huub Stevens, really wanted him to join the team. He signed a three-year contract with the Austrian club. He had previously worked with Stevens' assistant, Ton Lokhoff, at NAC Breda. On 20 October 2009, Mendes da Silva scored a goal in the 93rd minute against Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League. This goal helped his team get an important result. He played for Red Bull Salzburg until February 2013.
Playing for Panathinaikos
On 4 July 2013, Mendes da Silva signed a three-year deal with the Greek club Panathinaikos. The team was managed by Giannis Anastasiou. With Panathinaikos, he won the Greek Cup in the 2013–14 season. They beat PAOK with a score of 4–1 in the final. After finishing well in the Super League playoffs, Panathinaikos played in the qualifying rounds for the UEFA Champions League. Although they were defeated, they then played in the group stage of the 2014–15 UEFA Europa League.
Playing for the Netherlands
David Mendes da Silva also represented his country, the Netherlands, in international football. He played for the Dutch Under-20 team in the 2001 FIFA World Youth Championship. His team reached the quarter-finals but lost to Egypt. He made his first appearance for the senior national team on 7 February 2007. In total, he played seven matches for the Oranje (the nickname for the Dutch national team). His last game for the national team was in 2009, when he came on as a substitute in a 0–0 draw against Australia.
