David Miquel Mendes da Silva Gonçalves, born on August 4, 1982, is a former professional footballer from the Netherlands. He played for several well-known clubs during his career. These include Red Bull Salzburg, AZ, Sparta Rotterdam, Ajax, Panathinaikos, and NAC Breda. David was a very flexible player. He could play in many different positions in the midfield and also in defense. He was known for his great dribbling skills and his strong tackling ability.
Playing for Football Clubs
David Mendes da Silva was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands. He started his football journey at his hometown club, Sparta Rotterdam. He grew up playing in their youth teams. In 1999, he signed his first professional contract with Sparta. He played for them until 2004. During this time, he also spent a short period on loan at Ajax in 2003. However, he did not play in any official games for Ajax.
After leaving Sparta, David joined NAC Breda. He played there for two seasons. During his time at NAC Breda, he appeared in 56 games and scored five goals.
In 2006, David moved to AZ Alkmaar. He signed a five-year contract with the club. He became a regular player for AZ for four seasons. One of the biggest achievements during his time there was winning the Dutch league title. This happened in the 2008–09 season. Overall, he played 119 games for AZ and scored 11 goals in all competitions.

In 2010, David transferred to FC Red Bull Salzburg in Austria. The coach of Red Bull Salzburg, Huub Stevens, really wanted David to join his team. David signed a three-year contract with the Austrian club. He had previously worked with Stevens' assistant, Ton Lokhoff, when he was at NAC Breda.
A memorable moment for David came on October 20, 2009. He scored a goal in the 93rd minute against Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League. This late goal helped his team get a historic draw. He stayed with Red Bull Salzburg until February 2013.
On July 4, 2013, David Mendes da Silva signed with the Greek club Panathinaikos. The team was managed by Giannis Anastasiou. David signed a three-year deal. With Panathinaikos, he won the Greek Cup in the 2013–14 season. They beat PAOK with a score of 4–1 in the final. After finishing well in their league, Panathinaikos also played in the qualifying rounds of the UEFA Champions League. They were later moved to the group stage of the 2014–15 UEFA Europa League.
Playing for His Country
David Mendes da Silva played for the Netherlands Under-20 team. He took part in the 2001 FIFA World Youth Championship. His team reached the quarter-finals but lost to Egypt.
He made his first appearance for the senior national team on February 7, 2007. In total, he played seven games for the Netherlands. His last game for the Oranje (as the Dutch team is called) was in 2009. He came on as a substitute in the 84th minute of a 0–0 draw against Australia.
