David Murdoch "D.M." Macpherson (born November 17, 1847 – died February 4, 1915) was an important Canadian figure. He was a successful dairy farmer, an inventor, and a business owner. He also served as a politician, representing the area of Glengarry in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. He was a member of the Liberal-Patrons of Industry political group from 1894 to 1898. Sometimes, his last name is spelled McPherson.

Early Life and Family

David Macpherson was born on November 17, 1847. His birthplace was Lancaster Township in what was then called Canada West. His father, John McPherson, came from Scotland. His mother was Catherine Cameron.

In 1871, David married Margaret McBean. She was the daughter of Duncan McBean. David inherited his family's dairy farm.

The "Cheese King"

David Macpherson became very famous for making cheese. He was even known as the "Cheese King"! He owned many cheese factories. These factories were part of a large group called the Allan Grove Combination. His factories were located in Ontario, Quebec, and even in upper New York State.

Macpherson also made things needed for cheese production. He manufactured cheese boxes in Lancaster and Alexandria. He worked with Jacob Thomas Schell on this business. He also invented and patented a special steel hoop for cheese boxes. David Macpherson created several other machines to help make cheese.

Public Service and Politics

David Macpherson was a leader in the dairy industry. In 1887, he was the president of the Dairymen's Association of Eastern Ontario. Then, in 1890, he became the first president of the Dairymen's Association of the Dominion of Canada. This was a very important role for the country's dairy farmers. He also led the Dominion Cold Storage Company as its president.

In 1886, he was chosen to be a commissioner for the Indian and Colonial Exhibition. This big event took place in London, England. A commissioner helps organize and represent their country at such exhibitions.

Macpherson also served as a Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP). He represented the Glengarry area in Ontario's government from 1894 to 1898. He ran for re-election in 1898 but was not successful. Donald Robert McDonald won the seat instead.

Later Life

David Murdoch Macpherson passed away on February 4, 1915. He died in Montreal, Quebec. He was buried in the Presbyterian churchyard in South Lancaster, Ontario.
