David Nairne facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

David Nairne (born August 1655 – died 1740) was a Scottish man who supported the Jacobite cause. This meant he believed the Stuart family should be kings of Britain, even after they were removed from the throne. David Nairne worked closely with the exiled Stuart kings, James II and his son James Francis Edward Stuart, in France. He was also known as Sir David Nairne, Baronet.

David Nairne's Life and Work

David Nairne was the son of Sir Thomas Nairne and Margaret Barclay. After the Jacobites lost a big conflict called the War of the Two Kings, James II had to leave Britain. David Nairne followed him into exile in France. He became a trusted helper to King James II at his home, the Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye.

Working for the Kings

From 1689 to 1713, David Nairne had an important job as an Under Secretary of State. This meant he was a key person in managing the Jacobite political efforts. He became very close to King James II. Nairne handled many important letters and messages for the Jacobites. He also helped decide their plans and talked with friendly countries like France and Rome. He was one of King James's most trusted advisors.

After King James II passed away in 1701, David Nairne continued to be a vital part of the court of James's son, who was known as the Old Pretender. From 1706 to 1713, he was the Clerk of the King's Council. This role involved keeping records and helping with official meetings. Later, from 1713 to 1733, he was the Secretary of the Closet. This meant he managed the king's private letters and important messages.

In 1719, David Nairne was given the title of baronet within the Jacobite peerage. This was a special honor given by the exiled king. Many of his old papers and letters still exist today. They give us a lot of information about the Jacobite court in France. In June 1735, his daughter, Marie Nairne, married another Jacobite supporter named Andrew Michael Ramsay. David Nairne died in France, probably in early 1740.
