Who Was David Napier?

Early Life and Family

David Napier was born in a town called Dumbarton in Scotland. He came from a family of engineers. His father was Robert Napier. David was also a cousin to another famous engineer, also named Robert Napier. This cousin was known as the "Father of Clyde Shipbuilding." David's family had a history of working with machines. One of his uncles was even a blacksmith for a powerful Scottish leader, the Duke of Argyll.

Starting His Own Business

Later, David Napier moved south to London, England. He worked for a well-known engineer named Henry Maudslay. In 1808, David decided to start his own company. It was a special engineering business in Soho, London. In 1848, his son James Napier joined the company. The business then became known as D. Napier & Son.

Amazing Inventions

David Napier's company made many different kinds of machines. They built machines for making bullets and for shaping guns. They also created special machines to weigh coins for the Bank of England.

One of his most impressive inventions was a printing press. This press could print on both sides of a paper sheet at the same time! He also made a centrifuge, which is a machine that spins very fast, used for making sugar. People said his machines were "delicate as any clock." His printing press was especially praised by a famous printer named Thomas Curson Hansard.

A Lasting Legacy

After David Napier passed away, his grandson, Montague Napier, took over the company. Montague made the company even more famous. Under his leadership, Napier & Son became well-known for making early cars and, later, powerful airplane engines.
