David Thorn Payne, born on July 24, 1982, is an American athlete. He is famous for competing in the 110-meter hurdles race. This event involves running over ten barriers as fast as possible. David grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, and later moved to Wyoming. He trained in Cincinnati and lived in Northern Kentucky.

College Career

David Payne attended the University of Cincinnati. There, he competed in both the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles. He was a very successful college athlete.

University Achievements

While at the University of Cincinnati, David won many individual titles. He competed in the Conference USA events. In 2004, he was named Conference USA Outdoor Athlete of the Year. He helped his team, the Bearcats, win the C-USA outdoor title that year. David also set new school records for both hurdle distances. He was recognized twice as an NCAA All-American in the 110-meter hurdles.

David Payne has won several medals in big international competitions. He is known for his strong performances on the world stage.

2007 Season Highlights

In 2007, David Payne had a very successful year. He won a silver medal at the Pan American Games. He finished second behind Dayron Robles of Cuba. Later that year, he earned a bronze medal at the 2007 World Championships. He achieved his personal best time of 13.02 seconds in this race. This was a big surprise because David was an alternate. He stepped in for an injured teammate and arrived in Japan less than 24 hours before his race.

2008 Beijing Olympics

David Payne secured his spot for the 2008 Beijing Olympics at the U.S. Outdoor National Championships. At the Olympics in Beijing, China, he continued to show his talent. He won a silver medal in the 110-meter hurdles. His time of 13.17 seconds was his best for that season. Dayron Robles, the world record holder from Cuba, won the gold medal in that race.

2009 World Championships

In 2009, David Payne returned to top form after a break. He won the 2009 USATF National Championship in the 110-meter hurdles. This win qualified him for the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, Germany. In a very close race, called a photo finish, David just barely beat fellow Olympian Terrence Trammell. He won by only 0.003 of a second with a time of 13.115 seconds. Many people were surprised because Trammell was ahead coming off the last hurdle.
